We’re one of the thousands of families whose Christmas celebrations have to differ year to year due to work commitments.
Hospital staff, the military, police, fire, ambulance, coastguard, care workers, undertakers, call centres, retail staff… They will all work this Christmas. Life, and sadly death, continue no matter what the day.
I know of families where Christmas Day is moved altogether so both parents can be home, families where parents will split day and night shifts between them, families where the morning chaos is delayed or has to

happen as early as possible so we can be there.
Somehow we make it all work.
Yes there is a tinge of sadness in leaving your children on Christmas Eve or early Christmas morning, missing the magic and excitement and leaving a long suffering partner to deal with it all alone, again. But there is great pride in knowing what we do for our communities. We knew what we took on with these jobs after all.
There is nothing like driving home knowing a houseful of people are excitedly awaiting our arrival.

Especially our kids!!

I know of families where Christmas Day is moved altogether so both parents can be home, families where parents will split day and night shifts between them, families where the morning chaos is delayed or has to happen as early as possible so we can be there.
Somehow we make it all work.
