Dear Lily

You start school tomorrow. I can’t believe as I type this that nearly 5 years have passed since you were born and you have grown into a beautiful, independent character full of life and determination.  You have all the qualities that a girl needs to do well at school, and to grow into a woman that doesn’t accept what life throws at you but to challenge everything and ask why – why would I do that? Why would I do it like that?

As a nearly 5 year old it is a personality that means you clash with the world around you and much as it loves

you.  You clash with no-one more than me. I know why, it is because you are like me, we are the same. We question everything, we challenge everyone, we like to know why. But it does mean we battle, and we probably always will. You shout back at me, you tell me I’m wrong, you tell me I’m mean, but I love you all the same. I love you more than I could ever imagine, and one day, probably when you have your own nearly 5 year old you will know exactly what I mean, like I did.  Even if in the thick of it we drive each other crazy. But it is because I’m

like you, that I know I can’t give in to you all the time, as you have to know that isn’t how life works. You have to work out what you can have and what you need to strive to get.

I nearly typed that you have to work out what you can’t have, but that’s the wrong thing to say.  You still have a can do attitude that is enviable. You think nothing is impossible and at nearly 5 those barriers that the world create for us simply do not exist. At nearly 5 you are living as though“If you can dream it, you can do it.”  It is a lesson for me even

now. Dreams are there to follow and when you ask me if you can be a Mummy, a Swimming Teacher and a Police Lady all at once I will say yes. Yes you can, You can do anything you want to do.

So for now. Go to school tomorrow and make us proud. Make us proud by being a girl who can, who hasn’t yet stopped thinking everything is possible!
