A Day with Peter Andre and Disney

1
The summer holidays have been long, LONG and EXPENSIVE, so so expensive!!

So when Selfish Mother offered me the gift of 4 FREE VIP tickets to a Disney on Ice Event called Fit To Dance with the almighty Peter Andre in attendance, who the hell was I to say no?! A free day out that will keep the kids entertained and well, Peter Andre, it’s like every (older) mothers dream right?

It’s getting harder and harder to entertain my little darlings as the never ending weeks roll on, I have 4 kids (2 grown and left) and so a 12 year old daughter and a 4 year

old son still at home, two ages that don’t blend well. For the last 7 weeks I have been pulled in the opposite directions of Primark vs the Park.

Disney were about to change all of that, Disney cater for all ages, Pete was just about to meet his Mysterious Girl (soz couldn’t help myself) everyone would finally be happy!

The event was held at the very swanky Dominion Theatre in London and so to take full advantage of us heading off in to the smoke, I booked us a cheap hotel room the night before and dragged the kids around doing touristy stuff.

The new pull was, Covent Garden vs The Shrek Adventure and we did both.

The next day we got up fresh and eager to head off to the Disney on Ice Event, I dragged Miss Thing from her bed with mumbles of ”what are gonna do there? Do I really have to go?” with Mr Man frankly not having a clue what a Disney on Ice Event even was, but he was pretty excited to be getting back on the tube (weirdo).

So, we get to the theatre, 12 year old feeling awkward as hell (not sure hell feels awks?) when all the little ones start filtering in, she rolled her eyes

and clutched her little brothers hand, her little brother clutched my leg and I was left asking myself, for the millionth time this summer holiday ’what’s the point’.

We went into the room, Peter and his son Junior were there and my daughters mood started picking up, my son, not so impressed.  Tough crowd! I chatted to Peter about the pregnancy gift box from my little website The Whole 9 Months  I had sent to him and Emily, he was so grateful and chatted about how excited they were to be having another little Andre, a really genuinely nice,

personable guy, who lets face it, is pretty easy on the eye.

And then the event started, it was 40 or so of us in the room, mums, dads, kids and Disney people, 2 of whom were Disney on Ice skaters – Terry & Kerry (snigger)

Mike, the guy running the show, split us into 2 groups and got the kids involved. The idea was to choose characters for a story set on top of a snowy mountain (Frozen) and they had to imagine how they’d move around along with the story line, which is interesting when you have one boy being a flying penguin and my son being a

octopus? Bit random. And of course there were a few Elsas.

I saw my 12 year old start to relax and my 4 yr old start to engage, as is the Disney magic. She dropped her brothers hand and started to move around in a Father Christmas fashion (?) and I could see her awkwardness slip away and her imagination taking hold, she was enjoying the freedom of becoming lost in the story, I realised I hadn’t seen this side of her for a while and I felt a bit sad, and bit like I had failed (again).

The kids could then choose a few items of dress up in, cue my

sons elation at slipping on a tutu AND a cape, a formidable super hero right there.

They then set off in their small groups to rehearse their dances (with Pete) whilst we sat and watched, silently thanking Disney for giving us a well earned break! My small boy, in his element, doing his own thing, running up and down the room in a tutu and a cape being his favourite thing of ALL time, an octopus.

And then the show was up. A handful of kids, acting out random characters in tutus, with swords on the top of a snowy mountain, through the medium of

dance. It was quite beautiful if not a little surreal, but they were all so lost in the story and totally loving it.

The idea of Fit to Dance is that kids can use their imagination, create stories and characters and create a story through dance, and the huge bonus is that they’re getting exercise while doing it, they don’t even know it as exercise but exercise it is.

What a great way of getting them fit and keeping their imagination alive. Parenting these days can be hard and I find myself becoming their imagination, feeding them actives and

ideas on a plate, keeping them entertained by any other means rather than just letting them create their own fun. So many times these holidays have I heard ’I’m bored’ and I run to them with ideas to keep them entertained. Seeing my daughters imagination come alive was really lovely, and reminded me that they need to be stretched to use it. Fit to Dance really is a fun and healthy way to keep them fit, and feed their extensive, underused imaginations, such a simple and great concept and one that was very gratefully received by all the kids in the

room.

Thank you Selfish Mother for getting me in on the gig and thank you Disney for giving me an insight into my children’s MIA imagination. Turns out I got a hell of a lot more out of the Fit to Dance event than just swooning at the almighty Andre.

*That awks moment when Andre asks for your number and you have to politely decline coz you’re married. Totes embarrassing 😉
