HAPPY TRIGGERS

1
Sometimes this is all it takes: a bunch of flowers sitting in a vase on my kitchen table. There’s nothing more to it – this makes me happy. It doesn’t matter if they are a £3 bunch of roses from Sainsbury’s or £15 tulips from the posh florist down the road. When my eyes set upon some flowers – brighter the better – my soul experiences an instant uplift.

The blooms might pull me back from the brink of a child-related-mini-drama, they might be a much-needed distraction when I’m stressed, they might offer light on a gloomy wet-playtime day, or

they might simply enhance my mood when I’m happy anyway. They don’t solve world peace, but they do give me an energy boost, an endorphin hit and a feeling that there is beauty and wonderfulness in the world.

It’s not just me. Studies have shown that looking at something beautiful releases serotonin in the body, increasing happiness. The joy is that a ‘happy trigger’ like this doesn’t break the bank, and it is perfectly attainable to experience EVERY SINGLE DAY. Which is why flowers are now a must-have in my house, whether I buy them myself

or Tom brings me some home (after many years of hints).

My tip? Take a minute to work out what makes you tick. Then tailor your life to feature it – if it’s listening to an uplifting song in the car, or painting your nails are bright red, or starting your day with a cappuccino or taking five minutes to meditate. Whatever your poison, add it into your life on a daily basis. Happiness comes in the smallest of packages, so there’s no excuse for not indulging a little top-up as often as we can.
