Hail the Sisterhood

I thought about writing this whilst sat in the car with my husband, both listening to our daughters arguing for the umpteenth time.

Arguing, whilst still having a post-it note stuck on each of their foreheads from a game they had just been playing.

I did have a chuckle. Sisters. Can’t live with them can’t live without them.

When we found out we were having a third girl I have to confess I did panic a little.

Being the youngest of the girls in my family (I have two lovely brothers also) meant growing up with some stick but it also meant

being very spoilt, always having someone looking out for me, people to look up to and being able to learn from their mistakes and achievements.

My sisters played a huge part in making me the person I am today, was I strong enough to bring up three girls to be brave and pave their own way, but also remain close as sisters?

I chewed over this for sometime but as our daughters grew, I started seeing myself and my sisters in them – the crazy games, the living room discos, upside down chin faces…the ’she’s wearing my clothes’ arguments, bathroom

fights, bedroom raids – I know from experience how much your older sister’s room is like pure treasure when you’re five 🙂

Each passing year I’ve grown to let go of the panic, taking comfort in the laughter and the tears in our house. We stopped sweating the small stuff.  Although my husband was already fairly relaxed, I now no longer jump to the sound of shouting or stomping, as soon enough along come the giggles.

I try not to laugh when I know they are covering for each other, as a parent we have to tell them off but as a sister it warms my

Sisters are the girls you can be worlds apart from but still eternal friends, be at loggerheads with but still cry with after a night on the gin – the ones you’ll always turn to when the world lets you down.

Our girls are just as lucky as I was – they are surrounded by some amazing women to guide them through life; from their crazy Aunts and cousins to fabulous Grandparents and Great Aunts, not to mention my gorgeous group of ’sista’ friends!

I now sit finishing this (yes on my phone!) playing moshi monster guess who with

my youngest, while she is sat draped in her older sister’s jewellery.

I know, no matter how many fights they have, whatever their ups and downs, some of the best memories they’ll ever have will be with each other and when they are sat at our age, doing whatever they choose to do, they will sit back, remember and smile 🙂
