I often feel I should introduce myself as a professional drinker, truth be told I often do in the right company. It generally gathers some laughs, always an ice breaker. Though many times I feel that I skim over what I do in situations with other mothers why? I don’t know probably my own worry of other mothers seeing me as a lush al la Hogarth baby dangling from one arm and a bottle of gin clutched in the other of course you have the ‘judgy’ brigade but alcohol and women have always had a tense relationship. in the late 90’s when the term ladette was not endearing one. Women were chastised for being one of the lads really all we were doing was having a good time but it wasn’t ok. We all know it’s never Ok not to be able to remember what happened the night before, most of us have just deeply regretted the night before.

business, at times yes I have been patronised but I don’t really care as I own my business and therefore ultimately don’t have to care. Things are changing with women master distillers / blenders and producers in every part of the industry women are becoming represented. I started my Youtube channel this year and I wanted to share the randomness of my booze knowledge gleaned in the years I have been in the trade with the average person. I am having to self-promote myself and sometimes it’s weird, though you can’t trawl through Facebook without a

“its time for mummy juice” on a Friday but when you’re the one person talking about alcohol consistently people tend to view you differently. For the last 6 years I have kept my professional life separate on social media form my “mummy” life, with my Youtube channel I am crossing that divide. We all want be perceived as good parents responsible and caring, alcohol doesn’t really fit it to that neat picture. I do think if I were a man it would be different, I don’t think it would have any relationship to my role as a parent. As a Mother it

really does, I love talking about different spirits and challenging people to change their perceptions about different drinks and that was the driving force behind me starting my Youtube channel. As my finger hovers over the post button when am sharing my latest video I can’t help but think about those Mums saying to themselves “she must drink all the time.. those poor kids” I don’t drink all the time, I couldn’t and run a business and be a wife and mother. birth to c-section onto breastfeeding vs Bottle, weaning to which school the list goes on you can guarantee someone will have an opinion. Eventually you get over it and I am getting there so I am going to use my professional attitude of I don’t a give shit a bit more.
