I am not a STAY AT HOME MUM

Eugh the term Stay at home Mum or SAHM, gag! I can’t stand it. It’s one of those phrases that infuriates me, makes my blood literally boil. The way it is so passive aggressive. What does it even mean? Does it actually categorise anyone? I could be wrong but are there Mums that are locked at home, in their house, flats, abode? Mums that aren’t allowed to leave? That’s the image I get. The word STAY is so oppressive. It’s an order that is given, not a choice.
The way I see it is, if you are a Mum that isn’t ’at’ work you are either

Self-employed, Unemployed, on Maternity leave, on Statutory Maternity leave, signed off sick, have a condition physical or otherwise that effects your ability to participate in the formal ’go to work’ way. You may even be retired, get you. I bet you a penny that what every you are, you are not a STAY AT HOME MUM!
I am self employed. I work from home, I contribute my NI, I file a self assessment tax return. Just because I am able to do this, without stepping foot in an office doesn’t mean it should feel any less validated. Yet, to me it does. I

would relish an employment opportunity within a forward thinking company that could accommodate school hours for me. I would in return offer longevity because my priorities have hugely shifted from what they were pre-babies. I am not looking to flit between jobs for more money. Hours and location would far out weigh the monetary factor.
However, I have been labelled a ’Stay at home Mum’ since 2010. Like everything I have worked for, no matter how fluffy making paper garlands may be is irrelevant. Actually I freelance on some Graphic Design,

Admin and Social Media projects but still you get the picture.
Ultimately I don’t think that the word Mum/Mother needs to be extended as a definition of an individuals presumed daily activities. Another phrase to divide what should be a united tribe of Women who happen to be Mothers.
