I hate the weekly food shop – confessions of a nutritionist

1
I don’t know about you but one of my most dreaded tasks of the week is the food shop. And I don’t mean the having to go and do it, queue up, unpack etc. Let me break it down…..

Time. I literally cannot seem to find the time to sit and think about what we need. I can’t find the time to spend uninterrupted at the computer and type in each item. Having said that I’m sure there is time it’s just I sit and procrastinate because I can’t decide and I don’t know what we need. Which leads to the next point….
Planning. I don’t know why

I have such trouble with menu planning. It makes life simple and it saves money. When I do it I feel so much more relaxed and in control. I have so many recipe books, a scrap book full of cut out recipes and of course the whole set of Happy Tums recipes which are available to everyone who has been on a workshop via our support group. And yet I just cannot get my shit together and every week I put it off and then when I do make the teeth pulling decision to do it, it takes FOREVER. Because I do everything in my power to avoid it. Facebook, Instagram,

Choice. When I’m shopping and search for carrots it brings up so many options. I tend to like to buy organic wherever possible but that does make our shopping more expensive and so some weeks I mix it up a bit. And because it’s all there in front of me with differing offers – which let’s face it, are not always the bargain they make out to be – I feel

Environment. It seems that there is always something to worry about when it comes to modern life. My latest one is the amount of plastic that accompanies our food. I don’t want my pears to be wrapped in three layers of plastic, but I also don’t want them to be so under-ripe that we have to wait till summer to eat them. All the ‘ripe & ready’ are packaged like this. And when

you’re dealing with a small person with no teeth you don’t want a rock hard pear at breakfast! Anyway, my point is, whilst I’m shopping I’m also thinking about environmental factors and searching for better options and then feeling guilty that I’ve ordered it anyway.
Boredom. I think I’m just bored of feeding people! I make breakfast, lunch and dinner for everyone (except lunch for hubby during the week), EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK. Remember food is also my job and sometimes I think I just want to share the load with someone. Unfortunately, my

husband has no interest – unless it’s a bacon sandwich and some eggs for a weekend breakfast. There is a lot he does do but cooking and meal planning is not one of them.
But…..when I’ve done it I feel better. And I feel more motivated to cook and prepare food each day. And dare I say, I even enjoy it. I also feel more inclined to find a new recipe or work on a new one. So why don’t I just get on a do it? Answers on a postcard please……
