I have nothing to fear

1
On my way to pick up my daughter yesterday I stopped at a zebra crossing to let a small family cross. There was a mum, a dad, a baby in a pushchair and a young girl on a scooter. They looked more than happy, no doubt on their way home from, or on their way to the park. It was probably one of those odd days where you have nothing planned, your children are on school holidays and you just spend some quality time together. But something caught my eye, and I spent a lot of last night thinking about it.

The young girl on the scooter had a pink t-shirt on.

And on that t-shirt it read ‘I have nothing to fear’ in large bold black writing. And although to this girl, it was assumedly just any old t-shirt – it resonated with me.

Truth is, the way the world is at the minute, I’d be lying if I wore this t-shirt.

I try to steer clear of the news. Call it ignorance but if I’m honest it terrifies me, especially since becoming a mum. Any news I do here is bad news – of child abductions, war, Britain voting themselves into a shit stream – no news is good news as far as I’m concerned.

young age, this girl undoubtedly doesn’t currently fear anything (maybe spiders) but the fact is, the older she gets the more there is to fear. Which is a really sad concept.

I like to think that when the daughter was given this t-shirt it was handed over along with the knowledge that the world is a scary place, that it is only going to get scarier, but that she, as a child, as the future, can make a change. That she does not have anything to fear.

Doubtful. But I love the thought that this child is ruthless and perhaps more knowing than I

imagined, that she wears this t-shirt with pride and as a statement.

And maybe, just maybe, if we all made the conscious decision to not be scared anymore, who knows what doors it could open- for us and our children.
