MOTHERHOOD LAID BARE

I am slightly in awe of photographer Elinor Carucci who has captured her experience of motherhood in a series of candid snaps for her new book, Mother. What I love about her images is that they offer a beautiful slant on everyday moments that we all experience as a parent – including tears and tantrums, rushing on the school run, brushing our children’s hair or just lazing around on the bed.

Spanning from Elinor’s pregnancy in 2004, through induction, first hold of Eden in the theatre, the reality of breastfeeding twins, difficult bathtimes, the

children arguing, family hugs and more, the pictures follow Elionor and her children up to 2012.

This snapshot of motherhood is gloriously gritty and compelling. The pictures are great because they reflect the kind of small but amazing things that happen in families each and every day. These seemingly innocuous moments that make up our fabric of life – some of them good, some of them bad, some of them perfect, some just okay, and all of them wonderfully important.
