Mother’s Day Is Not For Mothers

1
Mother’s Day. It’s the one day of the year when you can expect chocolates, flowers maybe, and breakfast in bed cooked by someone with interesting ideas about flavour combinations (scrambled egg with jam anyone?). But on Mother’s Day, we Mothers just go on mothering. Nappies still need changing. A cabbage is stuck in the Sylvanian families oven and needs removing urgently. Boobs are flopped out for breastfeeding and cuddles are dispensed on demand.

But I don’t mind. I don’t expect a break from mothering because that’s just what I do, without

thinking. So great is the ’Mum Guilt’ that if I was told to absolutely not do any mothering at all today, I simply couldn’t do it. If I’d been packed off to a spa, I’d be constantly on the phone checking that antibiotics had been given to my youngest who has scarlet fever; that her nappy had been checked for runny poo (damn you Penicillin!); that Vaseline was constantly applied to my eldest who has very cracked lips; that the oven was switched on for the turkey dinosaurs at 4.

Being a Mother is something we can’t switch off from. Instead,

Mother’s Day best serves to remind others about the crazy, funny, frustrating, exhausting and amazing job we do, 24/7. I don’t expect flowers, or chocolates, or scrambled egg with jam, although they are lovely to receive. Actually I’m happy with a simple ”Thank You” from their Daddy and a homemade card saying ”I love you Mummy”. Because when other people realise stop and think about what Mums do, and thank us, it’s the best feeling in the world. At this point I mustn’t forget to thank my own Mum, who comes down to stay and cleans my kitchen

floor for me, entertains the kids and buys me a jam doughnut and eats half on the way home from the shop. That’s just what makes her so loveable.

I’m off to eat my chocolates in the bath. Happy Mothers Day everyone. You rock X

"I'm an Art Director, Writer and Mum of two girls – one aged 4 who's on the autistic spectrum, and one aged 21 months. I’ve changed thousands of nappies, breastfed for four years solid, and seen every episode of In The Night Garden. Twice. But they will never crush my spirit. I am Rebellious Mum – hear me roar! Quietly though, the kids are asleep." Read more on my blog at rebelliousmum.com or find me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @rebelliousmum
