On Mother’s Day, to my mum

1
Mum,

If I can do only half the job that you’ve done with me, then I know I’ll have gone above and beyond any standard I’ve set for myself as a mum.

On the days I doubt myself, I think about you and I know I’m doing alright. Because you – in all your glorious youness – are more than enough. You’re all I’ve ever needed from a mum and you should never have a reason to doubt it. I know that there are times you do and, while it makes me sad to think I could’ve caused that, it also gives me a spark of hope that my doubts are unfounded too

and I might just be enough for my own kids.

You once said that when I was little, you longed for someone to tell you that you were doing a brilliant job but no one ever did. Well you are, mum. You really are. It’s your support and your encouragement that has got me to where I am today. I wouldn’t be the mum I am without your guidance and without your example to look up to. The blue days would’ve gone on a little bit longer without you and the bright days would’ve been a little less shiny, so thank you for all that you’ve done. It’s all

there in my head and my heart spurring me on to be the best I can be.

It breaks my heart that you didn’t have your own mum around to make you feel the way you make me feel when you were bringing me up. I know that she would’ve been as proud of you as you are of me. And I can say that, because you make sure I know how proud you are every day. You’re so much stronger than you know, mum. And you make me feel strong when I’m around you. You’ve got my back and knowing that pushes me forwards to achieve my dreams and ambitions.

It pains me to

say it but I don’t think I ever truly appreciated you as a mum until I became one myself. Everything about you has always been all about us, your girls. Even now when we’re fully grown adults with our own families – that’s an incredible sacrifice and one I can only try and repay by raising my own children in the same way.

You rock, mum.

Love, Me

Mum to one and step-mum to another, working and living in the Midlands. I used to write about other people, now I'm trying my hand at writing about myself. Pretty much only had a baby so I could dress someone up in a costume at least once a week...
