Positive Birth.. What does that even mean?

1
We’re finally talking about it, positive birth! But what does that actually mean?

Throughout my work as a student midwife, antenatal and hypnobirthing teacher, I’ve supported many women through pregnancy and birth, and something that is evident, is that there isn’t a clear answer to this question! How is it that some women can have a natural vaginal birth with no interventions, and feel negatively about their experience? On paper that’s what everyone wants isn’t it? Then how can it be that other women speak positively of their

inductions and unplanned c-sections so positively, when those things would rarely feature on any ideal ’birth plan’!

And this is the key- a positive birth experience actually usually has very little to do with the ’method’ of birth at all. Rather, the experience that goes alongside it. Women who feel informed, supported, in control and involved in decision making tend to feel more positively about their birth, however it happens. Any ’type’ of birth can be positive, as long as it’s the right way for that mum and that baby at that

moment!

So, it’s just luck of the draw then? Well, not quite! There are certainly some things you can do during pregnancy to prepare and during birth to help things run smoothly! Get informed, know your options and stay positive!

If you’re facing a decision during pregnancy or birth this is my number one tip for making a positive decision! All you have to do is use your BRAIN!
