I was inspired to write this as a modern take on ‘Song for a fifth child’ by Ruth Hulbert Hamilton
…and I am aware of the irony of me posting this here…

Can wait til tomorrow,
Check-in with your family;
It’s them you should follow.
So quiet down twitter,
Put your laptop to sleep;
Stop scrolling and swiping,
Go ‘off-grid’ press ‘delete’.
Turn off all the filters,
From this life you project;
Engrossed in the feed,
That you constantly check.
Addicted to the ‘likers’,
And the ‘friends’

all unknown;
Euphoric from the alerts,
That pop-up on your phone.
Stop comparing yourself,
Live your life don’t feel bad;
It’s all just bravado,
That can make you feel sad.
It’s not what it seems,
Smoke and mirrors this game;
The need to share everything,
The glamour – so called fame.
Power down your devices,
Turn them off at the switch;
Stroll outside with a friend,
Not a glitch on the grid.
Our craving for the latest,
The fastest, to be first;
Leaving comments and sharing
As we digitally immerse.
Don’t live out

your life,
In these squares on your phone;
But up close and personal,
Not electronically alone.
Stop scrolling and swiping,
And absorbing your feed;
Take a look at life,
Turn your face from the screen.
When was the last time,
You truly cleared all the space;
Made time for your family,
Eye to eye – face to face?
No distractions, No bleeping,
No interuptions, No hearts;
No filters, No followers,
No hashtags – No farce?
I want living and breathing,
I want touch and smell,
I want fresh air and sunshine;
To feel alive and well.
Not

alone in the darkness…
With this flickering screen…
With everyone thinking…
I’m living the dream…
