My just 4 year old will be off to ’big’ school for the first time tomorrow and everyone keeps asking how I feel about it. Are you sad? Are you going to miss him?
Well, yes. But I’m also so excited for him. Not just because I’ll have 5 whole days with slightly less kiddy chaos, but because he’s starting an important, life-changing chapter.
He’ll learn to read, write, count and all the academic stuff. He’ll learn sports and how to be a team player.
He’ll also develop his interpersonal and social skills, which’ll lead to real friendships

that could last him a lifetime. He’ll begin to learn about love and how relationships work. Let’s hope he’s not a heart-breaker!
I’m sure he’ll have a few disagreements or bad experiences along the way too, but that’s all part of growing up. I’ll guide him though the tricky bits as best I can.
He’ll get more independent and need me less.
He’ll develop his identity, sense of humour and personality. Will I still be able to crack him up?
At school, he’ll change physically, mentally and emotionally, and I can’t wait to get to know the

person he’ll become.
So as I way bye to my baby at the school gates tomorrow, I won’t be sad. Instead, I’ll keep positive. I’ll look forward to greeting my ’big’ boy and hearing all about his adventures at ’big’ school.
