Step away for the day, ou une semaine en France

You know the time after you’ve had a baby when you are shattered and feeling generally grotty? Well, I have got an amazing idea to tell you about. It’s not going to make your baby sleep all night or suddenly give you Abby Clancy’s, 10 weeks post baby, beach body…bleurgh. However, for at least one day, &Breathe can make you feel yourself again.

&Breathe runs postnatal retreats offering new families the chance to relax and focus on fitness and diet. The first retreats were held at the Manoir La Croix de La Jugie in South

West France, a property owned by the company’s founder, the lovely Clio Wood, and excitingly the retreats are coming to London in the summer of 2016. The concept will combine all the elements of the week long retreats into one morning, or afternoon, of blissful me time and the Kitten and I were lucky enough to be invited to the tester day earlier in January.

The afternoon started with an opportunity to mingle with the other new mums and dads over coffee and sugar free banana bread, which was the yummiest ever; unfortunately I was told it was not

calorie free. Clio welcomed everyone and went on to introduce her team, which included two lovely nannies to look after the mini ones! Once the Kitten was safely ensconced in the crèche area I was super keen to get on with some well needed fitness sessions.

The fitness sessions are run by the amazing Caroline Bragg. She is a personal trainer who fully understands the strains that pregnancy and birth put on your body and pushes you just hard enough so that you safely achieve that satisfying achy feeling the next day. She is also a trained

nursery nurse and was super comfortable, and very sweet, with all the little ones. Two classes ran back to back, a high impact class followed by a yoga/ Pilates style session. I chose to do only the first class, as I love this styles of fitness and, to be perfectly honest, the lure of a massage was too great.

In a peaceful area, with the familiar sound of ‘spa music’, talented hands worked their magic. The masseur told me I had a lot of tension in my shoulders, no surprise there, Bear is nearly four but still likes being carried a lot, and I

enjoyed having it massaged away with a relaxing head, neck and shoulder massage. What a luxury to have time to do this with a four month old baby!

& Breathe works with many specialists and, over more refreshments (yes I ate more banana bread), we were lucky enough to have their medical advisor on hand to answer all our neurotic parent questions. She was bombarded with questions about boobs, excema, reflux…you name it. So nice to get a quick answer on all those little questions that seem too silly to book an appointment for.

Finally, we

were treated to a nutrition talk whilst private chef Sam Waterhouse prepared a delicious, healthy and easy to make meal. She gave some great, easy to follow, advice on what your body needs as a new mum and how your diet can help in beating fatigue and low moods. Sitting around eating and chatting, Kitten back in hand, we shared stories of new motherhood with good humour and no judgement.

What a great afternoon spent focusing on my well-being and chatting to some kindred spirits, who refuse to allow motherhood to totally steal their identity. I am

tempted to head over to France for a longer experience, take a look at the website and tell me you don’t feel the same!

Note: Mr LFB was on Bear duty (they rushed to see The Good Dinosaur at the cinema without me) and when I told him about the day later he was very jealous, especially about the massage.
