The Edinburgh Festival as a family.

So it could be the most creative experience we have ever had as a family or it could be taking on a ridiculous amount of pressure that will lead to arguments!

Either way the venue is booked and myself and my husband (comedian Rob Rouse, Upstart Crow-BBC) are taking my play The Ladder, along with our two children and the dog (the Guinea pigs are being looked after by Granny Bean) up to the Edinburgh festival this summer.

I am going to write this blog to remember our journey, which hopefully won’t end in divorce. But stay tuned to see how we get

on!

Until a week ago I was sure that there was nothing that would convince me to do such a ridiculous thing.

Then there was a slight shift in dynamics; Rob returned home from filming for 7 weeks, the mornings got a little lighter, and I started to feel like there was a tiny amount of space in my days again.

Rob spotted this chink in my Edinburgh armour and convinced me that working together on a show was a great idea… We shall see.

So far we have got a great venue at The Guilded Balloon with an early slot of 11.15am. This means that we

will have time to see shows in the afternoon with the kids and not spend our whole day with nerves and adrenaline fuelling our parenting, not a good mix.

We have done the festival before but never performing in the same show. Last time I performed there I remember feeling so distracted and self obsessed all day until my show was over, the kids were looked after by a mixture of CBeebies and bribery. The morning slot should hopefully make me feel slightly less like a terrible mother- that’s the idea anyway. Rob has another show to do at 6.30pm so his

fathering may be questionable if that rule applies to us both.

At the moment I am experiencing a mix of;
-absolute fear which makes me feel physically sick,
-excitement to be working with Rob-he is a very funny man,
-guilt over stealing the kids summer holidays to embark on what is essentially a vanity project/type of weird couples therapy for their parents.
These feelings I am sure will stay with me until this stupid idea is seen through to the end. (The end being August 12th which is 138 days, not that I’m counting).

I am now just waiting on

my first anxiety dream.

Why am I doing this again?
