Sara Berman, the former fashion designer, is now an artist and Creative Director of N.Peal Cashmere, she is mother to Lulu 9, Raf 5, Marley Beau 21 months

What do you love about motherhood?
My kids, the chaos, the sense of something greater. I am lucky in that I can shape my time and be very hands on. I love taking and fetching from school, travelling lots with them all… As they get older and we come out of the baby baby phase I am loving the games we can play together, the chatting, the later bed times, mellow family dinners and general hanging

out. I love being mum but I must say that 3 is so much easier than one and when I had Lulu at 28 I was so young and I struggled. Now that I am in my late 30’s and there are 3 of them, it is a whole different ball game.

What do you love about your career?
I am very very lucky in that I very simply love what I do. I have carved my own path over the past 13 years and now I am in the wonderful position of being both a visual artist and also Creative director of N.Peal. Each feeds of the other. Fashion is a language I love and understand and N.Peal is an

exciting brand. I also love cashmere so I feel rather lucky to be working with them. And Painting makes me happy. I am very disciplined and work every day either painting or researching ideas. It is also very hard, frustrating and even boring when things aren’t going right, but occasionally I can fly and it all comes together in a moment of total brilliance and it is those moment that make me fly. I guess it is important for me to be able to move across the two things. Art and design info each other but it also gives my brain a chance to switch sides

it is pure joy. Loads of eating, playing and general hanging out.

Top hotel for weekend break without kids?
Es Cucons in Ibiza. My husband and I go every year on our anniversary.

Your idea of blissful ’selfish’ time alone?
Every day I paint alone in my studio. It is necessary for me to do this in order to be happy, centred, a happy mother and a good friend. I read an essay by Ayn Rand called the Virtue of Selfishness. She believed that the word ’selfish’ has been given negative associations but the reality is that each man (or woman) has a

responsibility to nurture their own self interests at the core of their being. Only by doing so do we free others of their obligations towards us and lead an honest life. I’m with her.
