THIS TIME LAST YEAR

1
On New Years Eve 2017 we had a fairly standard night, watching Peaky Blinders and seeing in the New Year whilst our nearly two year old slept next door, waiting for Jools Holland to come on so we could go to bed.

He was due to be working away the next day, and I was about to find out that he wasn’t in fact travelling for work, but to a hotel down the road to meet the girl he’d undertaken a long term affair with.

Over the course of the next few days I would uncover the truth of what he’d really been up to. At the time my life just shattered.

Could he really have done what she said? this wasn’t part of the story.

We had been together for 8yrs by this point and all of a sudden the future for me and my little girl looked very different. I had amazing friends and family who coached me through massive anxiety and depression on a daily basis. I had a little girl who didn’t let my world stop and that would guide me every day to ensure that I conducted myself in the right way – she was my inspiration.

I would never want her to think that what he father did to us was ok. Not to say that my

job was to turn her against him, not at all, but she will not grow up thinking that’s how men treat women. I had called the affair when it was in its infancy, but I put my paranoia and upset down to having only recently given birth and still being in a baby haze, little did I know it had been going on way before then.

I threw him out the instant I found out about the affair, and soon enough bagged up all of his stuff and changed the locks. What happened now was on my terms. It soon became clear I needed to be by my family – I would sell the house,

find my daughter a new nursery, and rejig my hours at work to accommodate a new 140mile round trip from Oxford every day.

After five months with my parents we moved into our new house just before Christmas. When 2019 hit, it became clear that one final change needed to occur…my job. I’d been at my current job for 7yrs, I remember commuting back to the flat after my interviews to be greeted by dinner and wine, the story couldn’t have been any different now.

Last week I handed in my notice and in three weeks time I’ll be starting a new job in

Oxford.

What a year, and what a team me and my daughter make. I have such an amazing support network around me and amazing male role models for my daughter, we are going to be just fine.
