5 health goals that took me by surprise
1
After 18 months of being self employed, I arrive into 2019 knowing that I need to make some changes to my health. Running my business from home has some amazing perks but it does also mean I don’t have the usual transit from one place to another. I am definitely sitting down more and moving less. On weekdays my exercise consists of taking the 2 minute stroll to school and back. I get bored easily when it comes to exercise and just don’t seem to get excited about it the way other people do. My chosen way to wind down after a busy week in the

’office’ is to crack open the wine instead of hitting the gym. With all of this in mind, 2019 is the year I get stronger, fitter and healthier.
The obvious choices –
– Gym membership is now being used, not just paid for!
– Calories in/out being logged on Myfitnesspal, my preferred website to monitor my stats
– Water intake increasing and wine intake being saved for special occasions
– Eating meals. (Left to my own devices I tend not to eat all day, but my goodness that makes we raid the sweet cupboard at night

time!)
I got to thinking of other ways that I might have sunk into damaging health habits perhaps without even realising. I took to my notepad to splurge out everything I could think of and hit on some realisations you might be able to relate to…
1) Sunlight
My mood certainly increases in the longer days. In the summer I want to be outside, I’m (a little) more inclined to go the gym, or a midday stroll, or a swim. All of these things feel yucky in the winter with darkness and cold. Further research led me to discovering Sunlight Lamps

to help combat SAD (Seasonal affective disorder) which from reading about I don’t think I have to an extreme but do see the benefits from these lamps. They vary in prices from £24 to £781 ! As we are on a money saving mission at the moment, I have put the lower priced one on my shopping wish-list, but have made a commitment to myself to get more fresh air each day even if only for a few minutes and I’ve got myself some vitamin D tablets also.
2) Take time out
Being a busy mum, keeping house, running and growing a business, I certainly

have a lot of demands on my time. That being said, I also know that I am more productive when I force myself to take a break. Forced is a strong word, but it’s true. I literally have to drag myself away from my desk sometimes, my livelihood depends on my business. There is ALWAYS another task to do, another load of washing, another destination to research, another blog to write, a child that want’s another cuddle at bedtime. The truth is…I love it all. I love being busy and almost relish in it, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Yet a few minutes

break from my desk, chance to re-focus on my tasks, perhaps step outside for some fresh air (see point 1) rejuvenates me and I return better than before. I’m committed to getting up and having a brief stretch after I’ve completed each task and taking a short break at midday.
3) Sleep
No secret to this one but it’s not until I came to write about my health goals did I realise what an impact my dreadful sleep pattern has on me. Being a Miracle Morning-er (more on that in later posts) I am up extremely early through the week so that I can

have some peace before the rest of the hours stirs. However, come the end of the week – Late Night Friday = Sleep In Saturday. I’m not talking mid-day lie in’s here, I have a 2 year old after all, but I do rise much later than my weekday routine, meaning my body clock is all over the place! Research has explained to me that having more or less a similar bedtime & morning routine can help.
4) Clothes
Perk of working from home = no uniform. However, unless I have client appointments or video calls slowly but surly it has become all to

easy to just grab a pair of old leggings and t-shirt. As crazy as it sounds I actually miss having work clothes to put on. Strange hey! I think it’s something in the mindset of ’this is work’ or ’this is home’ When I do have client appointments or a trip to head office lined up, I find myself actually getting excited to be putting my make up on! New strategy. I have set myself out clothes that are specifically to be my ’uniform’. I have signed up for some co-working days at a local shared office which makes me nervous as I’ve never been to one

before, but also great to be connecting with other local business owners.
5) Being grateful
Every day I write in my journal the plans I have and the big goals that I want to achieve. I recently watched a goal-setting video which really struck a cord with me. It was about considering the goals we want to achieve for ourselves, for the journey, for the experiences, for what is to be our legacy. Living in a social media world it is so easy to compare ourselves with what others seem to be accomplishing and perhaps even to let ourselves be

influenced by that. From now on, as well as staying focused on my big vision I’m also going to enjoy the now and be grateful for the journey.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the above. Have you set yourself any new goals for 2019?
Let me know in the comments.
With love,
Rebecca
