Dead of night, all asleep,
A cry jolts you alert,
A cough, a whimper, another cry,
You are up, awake.
You rush along the hall,
Anxiety hits fast,
Expecting sick, a fever, shits,
This time, just a dream.
Only wants her mum,
You curl up by her side,
Stroke her little head,
As she drifts away to sleep.
You try and leave, she holds on tight,
Her arms around your head,
You curl your legs around hers,
Put a crick in your neck.
A few hours later, an ache in your side,
You wriggle your way

free,
Back to your warm bed,
To find your space is filled.
Daughter two clutching tummy,
Says she’s feeling sick,
Administer meds, hold her tight,
Going to be a long night.
A new dawn breaks,
Bleary eyed, you force yourself to stir,
Breakfast to make, school runs,
Not sure how you will do it.
One stays home, too sick for school,
You know what that means too,
No work happening here today,
Mum life taking over.
Piles of laundry, toilets to clean,
Mop up poorly child,

mind,
But work will have to wait.
The Calpol works, child feels better,
Ready for a game,
You head is hurting, coffee won’t work,
Dinner still to make.
Fight breaks out, A bloody nose,
Stick them in the tub,
Finally get them into bed,
Though they don’t want to sleep.
‘I’m thirsty, my leg hurts,
These PJs make me itch.’
A million excuses to stay up.
Why won’t they get the hint.
Finally down, you’re tired out,
But the laptop can’t wait.
Pop it open, words to type,
A few hours, till you

see bed.
Well past midnight, work ended,
You crawl between the sheets,
Switch out the light, breathe with relief,
When, ‘Mummy’ gets called again.
