Secret Diary of a Mumpreneur: Playing Dress Up

1
After all the excitement of our launch into Sainsbury’s we’d entered a new phase of Mum-preneuring (that can be a verb right?) and with it a new wardrobe.  Instead of the jeans and trainers I wore every day for 18 years, the two options became ‘the sublime’ (swishy hair, make up and heels) or ‘the ridiculous’ (activewear in which very little ‘activity’ actually ever took place).

Fin embraced the heels, rocking them as though it was what he was born to do, and for my part, I embraced the not-so-active wear. I found it hard to argue

with the elasticated waist-bands.

In these first few months, I also developed a nasty case of too-busy-itis. I felt as though every ping of the email or every beep of the mobile needed to be responded to there and then.  Going from working with a team in a well-funded business to a start up with less than two beans to rub together was a shock and the enormity of everything that needed to be done was, at times, completely overwhelming. Office cleaner? Tick. Accounts Payable. Tick. Social Media. Tick. Marketing. Tick. Sales. Tick. Activewear.

Tick.

How is anyone supposed to know how to do ALL this stuff when they never have before?  The answer that I came to SLOWLY over time is that you can’t do it all.  Instead, its best to try and focus on the smallest things that will make the biggest difference.  In our case, it was winning new business with Ocado and Waitrose, rather than commissioning someone to make a giant lolly costume that we found hilarious. Still, you can’t get it right all of the time can you?

I’m a mumpreneur and Mum to seven year old Finlay, trying (but not always succeeding) to do both those jobs well. I’m a ninja of the juggle, nailing loads of washing on conference calls and silencing my son by conjuring a well-timed snack whilst simultaneously bashing a keyboard. My brand has grown from the kitchen table to supermarket shelf and my boy has grown from 50cm to well over a metre. I can’t take all the credit for those two things but I can try and enjoy the ride even if I sometimes drop the ball. When I’m not out and about being mumpreneurial, I can mostly be found in my spare room in ‘activewear’. Very occasionally I am actually active in it too.
